Always Rejoicing: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for August 21, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. Sometimes, I need an attitude adjustment. My life is good. Yes, there are some challenges, but often I find myself annoyed more than I should be, and show myself to others as grumpy and cynical and negative. There is much around me that I cannot control, but I can control how I respond to it. One of the most magnificent chapters in all of Scripture is the fourth chapter of Paul’s letter to the Philippians. During the first three weeks of [...]

A Toolbox for the Real World

by Patrick Long-Quian This summer I was provided the opportunity to work at St. Luke’s as an intern in Communications and I was incredibly excited. I learned so much working at St. Luke’s and saw many of the things that go on behind the scenes. I came to appreciate everything the church does and how it does it even more than before I started my internship. Having attended St. Luke’s since third grade this place has nurtured me and spurred spiritual growth and maturity in me. When I was a little kid, I believed what they taught me [...]

Turning Over a New Leaf: Inside-Out Habits With Dr. Tom Pace for August 14, 2016

2017-03-28T14:56:36-05:00August 14th, 2016|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service.   A PERSONAL PRAYER O Loving God, Every once in a while, I get a reminder that I am mortal. I lead a memorial service and realize that there will be one for me as well. I sort through old family stuff and throw away papers and notes that belonged to parents and grandparents and realize how soon we fade into memory. I wonder what I have passed on to those who follow me, to my children, to those [...]

When the World Shifts: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for August 7, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service.   A PERSONAL PRAYER Gracious and merciful God, Right now, things are calm in my world, at least as calm as my world gets. The problems I face seem surmountable. My heart is at peace. Thank you God, for seasons like this. Joy is easy to claim, and gratitude wells up from my heart. I praise you and thank you. But it hasn’t always been so, God; you know that. There have been some days, some seasons, when it seemed like everything [...]

All will be well, all will be well, all manner of things shall be well

by Laurie Noteboom This fall marks a new stage in our family as our oldest son begins high school. As excited as he is for the change, the transition was breaking this mom out in a rash early this summer. However, a meal and an ah-ha moment reminded me all would be well. Recently we stopped at Chick-Fil-A for lunch, as we have so many times in his fourteen years. Between bites, my eye caught the little ones playing in the indoor play-scape and I started to remember all the days he had done the same thing. How many [...]

Mosaic: A Music Camp for Children

2017-03-28T14:56:41-05:00July 31st, 2016|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

by Faith Ayers Last week was our first Mosaic Music Camp, an outreach program of the Children’s and Fine Arts Ministries at the Gethsemane Campus. Over thirty K-5th grade children from all over the Gulfton/Sharpstown area came to this week-long program. We had no idea what to expect, but we had a hope that we could create a space where children could discover their musical abilities in a safe, fun, and loving place at a minimal cost to their families. God did that in a big way. He made a way for us to give our children a quality [...]

Renewing a Right Spirit: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for July 31, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER Loving God, My father used to ask me a single question, over and over again, when he was angry about something I had done. He would inquire “what were you thinking?” My answer was usually, “Nothing. I wasn’t thinking anything. Dad, obviously I just wasn’t thinking.” That never seemed to satisfy him. I don’t suppose it satisfies you, either, when I do something that is hurtful to others, hurtful to myself, and most importantly draws me farther away from [...]

Dennis’ Tree

2017-03-28T14:56:44-05:00July 24th, 2016|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

On July 14, 1984, Dennis Crosby Fowler Jr. passed away after a tragic accident at his summer job. He was only 14. Dennis’ death shook the entire community of Gethsemane UMC, now the Gethsemane Campus of St. Luke’s. Current members remember coaching his baseball team and mentoring him in the youth group. A framed picture of Dennis’ sneakers, with the phrase “Jesus is Lord” inscribed in pen on the soles, hangs in the Gethsemane education wing. It’s as if Dennis lives on at Gethsemane. His memory lives on here, like he’s still sitting in the pews on Sunday morning. [...]

Listening for God Through Chaos: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for July 24, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER God, Sometimes, I feel confused. There are so many things going on in the world—politics and elections, race relations, killings of police officers, concerns of police brutality, terrible conflicts and wars around the world, the threat of ISIS, natural disasters, concerns about the price of oil and the local economy, environmental concerns, debates dividing our denomination. So many voices shouting to pay attention to them. “Hey, what about me?” the voices all [...]

Hey! Where Did It Go?

If you noticed that the prayer tree was not in the hall as you came into church today, you would not be alone. Moved into storage for the next few months, it will reappear in the Fellowship Walk, and will continue to serve as a witness for prayers of the people. More than 10,000 leaves have been placed on the tree since it was “planted” last fall. Many are requests, and as time has passed, more answered prayers have appeared. Each leaf is prayed for by the prayer team and then placed on the tree. On moving day, a [...]
