Event: The Chancel Choir of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church will perform Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, joining the choirs of St. John’s UMC (Albuquerque, NM) and St. Paul Lutheran Church (Albuquerque, NM), and orchestra.

Where: The Armed Man will be presented at the University Center in the Morris Cultural Arts Center at Houston Baptist University.

Details: 100 members of the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir will perform Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, joining the choirs of St. John’s UMC (Albuquerque, NM) and St. Paul Lutheran Church (Albuquerque, NM), and orchestra on Sunday, October 5, 2008 at the University Center in the Morris Cultural Arts Center at Houston Baptist University. This performance is open to the public with no admission fee.

While Karl Jenkins may not be a household name, his music will be familiar to some
who may know him as the composer of the popular Adiemus- Songs of Sanctuary
projects. A native of Britain, Jenkins composed The Armed Man on commission
for the millennium by Britain’s Royal Armouries. Dedicated to the victims of the
Kosovo crisis, this work is “a contemporary example of a mass based on the
15^th century French song, L’homme armé (The Armed Man)”.

Set within the framework of a Christian mass, The Armed Man is a major choral work,
which uses both sacred and secular texts by such noted poets as Swift, Dryden
and Tennyson.

As described on the album, The Armed Man is “a powerful and compelling account of the descent into, and terrible consequences of, war.” The music ranges from haunting to soaring to tender to a cacophony during the battle scene. The Armed Man is a masterful piece that all who hear will never forget. Adding a note of poignancy to the piece is the fact that the CD was released on September 10, 2001, the day before the tragic events in the US.

The three choirs previously presented this work in the Rodey Theater at the University of New Mexico the first weekend in June.

The choir of St. Luke’s UMC (Houston) is directed by Sid Davis. The choir of St. John’s UMC (Albuquerque) is directed by Matthew Greer. The choir of St. Paul Lutheran Church (Albuquerque) is directed by Bradley Ellingboe.

Among my favorite sacred spots in Jerusalem is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. An unassuming building on the outside, the inside is breathtaking. This single church houses five magnificent sanctuaries-Roman Catholic, Armenian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox…All of these are built off a single oval hallway.

During my visit, I saw people pouring out their souls at altars, lifting their hearts to a living Christ in modes of worship that were literally foreign to me. Nonetheless, it was clear that their worship was authentic, heartfelt, and passionate. The experience was made complete by overhearing a tour in front of me in German, and one behind me in Japanese. The Christian faith is so much broader than my own practices, my own understandings, my own perspectives. Our God is a big God.

This Sunday, July 13, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, we will discuss Acts 15, in which Paul returns to Jerusalem to share with the disciples the miraculous movement of the Holy Spirit outside of the Jewish people. How prone we are to make our own experience of God a rule for everyone else! I hope you will come and worship with us.

These past few weeks in Sunday School, our children in K-5th grades have been working on a Children’s Summer Art Project that will be on display at the Fine Arts Fair on Sunday, August 24 in the Activities Center. Outgoing Children’s Ministries Director, Christy Heno, explained to the kids that Art is a very important part of the worship experience, that we can express our thoughts and feelings about God in our words, in music and through visual artistic expression. Specifically, Christy asked the children to draw something that showed where they see God. She admitted that was a stretch for some, so she also suggested that they draw something that reminded them of God. The results are a charming collection of whimsical, thoughtful and sincere representations of how our children interpret the concept of God in their lives. PERSECUTION by Tom Pace

Many years ago, I read a paraphrase of the New Testament that put these words in the mouth of Jesus: “Well if it were easy, even the Pharisees could do it!”

This clearly is excessively disparaging to the Pharisees, who were pretty good folks, by and large. But Jesus’ teaching on this had little to do with the Pharisees and had everything to do what it means to be his follower. The Christian life brings with it many hardships and much persecution. If it doesn’t, we probably aren’t doing it right. Our job is not to avoid those hardships, but rather to use persecution as a springboard to higher living, as a launching pad to move the gospel into new and different places.

St. Paul faced so much persecution and hardship. At every turn, he met resistance to his message. Everywhere he went, people were threatened. But that persecution only served to advance the gospel further and further, to new and different people in new and different places.

This Sunday, July 6, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, we will discuss Acts 14 and how to deal with the hardships we face in the Christian life. I hope you join us.

St. Lukes UMC sends toys to children in Ghana

Every Tuesday morning a group of volunteers meet at a small building across Edloe from St. Luke’s United Methodist Church to repair furniture and do minor home repairs. In addition, the woodworkers hand-craft over 10,000 toys each year for underprivileged youngsters. Some of the toys are donated to the local Marine Reserve Toys for Tots program, and many of the Marine personnel take these toys to distribute wherever they’re deployed. Including Ghana! Recently the woodworker’s group received several emails about how some of their handiwork has reached the African nation of Ghana courtesy of the U.S. Marines! Master Sergeant Donald E. A few weeks ago, I assembled an outdoor table for our patio. When I was finished, there remained two bolts and a nut. What were they for? Were they extraneous? Or had I simply forgotten to use them? It didn’t really matter to me; it seemed that the table worked just fine!

Sometimes, we all feel a bit like that extra bolt. We are here, given life on this earth, and therefore must be somehow included in God’s purpose for the unfolding Kingdom of God. But we can’t figure out exactly how we fit in. Are we extraneous? Valuable in any way? We yearn to hear God’s voice, identifying a clear and personal purpose for our lives. We look inside ourselves, and out in the world, but no clear calls are forthcoming. So we remain frustrated. Sometimes, we eventually stop listening for that call altogether.

This week at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, we will discuss St. Paul’s sense of call in a sermon entitled “Vocation.” Read Acts 13, and come and worship with us. We will do everything we can to make you feel welcome.

The role of the poet has always been to record the culture and history of a people. The thing that’s changed is that there are many more competing ways of recording that. Why put it in a poem? Why not a film or a novel or a blog? For me it has to be because a poem is the highest form of language. A. This is a wonderful poem to share with children. It is in quatrain form with an aa/bb rhyming pattern and a simple iambic tetrameter rhythm, easy and fun to read out loud. This summer, there is a familiar face in the halls of St. Luke’s, and it belongs to Peyton Davis, who is this year’s Bridges Academy of Fine Arts Summer Intern. Peyton has just finished her freshman year at Centenary College (Shreveport), where she is a Vocal Music Education major and also studies instrumental music. Peyton, who grew up at St. Luke’s and is a former member of the Pure Sound choir, is the daughter of Sid and Cindy Davis. Peyton says that her job is primarily doing a lot of busy work like making copies, phone calls, etc., and she’ll be assisting with the two Music Theater Camps for children and youth this month. She says that it’s been illuminating to see all the behind the scenes work that goes on to support the Bridges teachers, which is one of the rewarding aspects of her job. Discussion at the June Board of Stewards meeting helped view the pros and cons of pursuing a long range plan for St. Luke’s facilities.
