The word &#8216;tenebrae&#8217; is Latin for shadows or darkness. This service attempts to recreate the emotional aspects of the passion story, with scripture narratives, special music, solemn hymns and a meditation.&nbsp;</span></font></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 9pt"><span style="font-size: 10pt"><span style="color: #000000"><span style="color: #333333"><span style="color: #333333"><font size="2"><span style="color: #000000; font-size: 12pt">The service begins in candlelight, with as many candles as there are readings, plus a Christ candle. One by one, the candles are extinguished, and following the final reading of Christ&#8217;s last words, the Christ candle is extinguished, leaving the church in total darkness. These four Commissions report to the Executive Committee, which then reports to the Board of Stewards about the activities of each Commission. </span></span></div> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="color: #000000; font-size: 12pt">Because the Board of Stewards oversees administrative details for both campuses, it became clear that the Gethsemane campus needed its own administrative entity to be a "nimble and independent support group" for its lead pastor, <strong>Justin Coleman</strong>. It also makes it very clear who does what, and will lead to greater understanding on the part of all employees. </span></p> <p style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt">&nbsp;</p> <p style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-size: 12pt">The meetings are filled with positive discussion, probing questions, revelations and even some eureka moments and laughter. These guidelines are a work in progress, and as we grow into the merger, they will be updated to incorporate revisions, as they are determined. In lieu of paying a fee to use the space, rather the artists pay a commission to St. Luke's each time a piece is sold. This money is put into the Fine Arts Fund, which goes towards repair, restoration and acquisition of pieces in our permanent art collection. </span></p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">&nbsp;</p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt">The scope of our collection is vast, with a wide variety of art in various mediums (paintings, sculpture, photographs, textiles and so on), and great care is taken to manage and document its status. When a piece is in need of repair, it is given priority as funds become available.</span></p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">&nbsp;</p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt">Recently, several paintings that have most recently hung in the Parlor were sent to St. Mark's Art Restoration to be cleaned and&nbsp;repaired. The pair of paintings by artist George Dawson were in particularly sad shape, with years of accumulated grime, damaged canvases and frames. After a long and tedious restoration process, the two paintings have now been returned to St. Luke's. What a thrill it is to see their true beauty restored! Details that had once been obscured are now visible. The tones are jewel-like, and the gilt frames simply gleam. </span></p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">&nbsp;</p> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt">According to "A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans", written and compiled by William E. Connelley, George F. Dawson was born at Whitehall, Illinois, in 1846. He spent his early life there and in 1861, enlisted in an Illinois Infantry Regiment, seeing active service throughout the war. He took up the profession of sign writer and scenic painter after the war, and in </span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt">that profession he traveled all over the western states and territories and was employed particularly in painting scenery in opera houses. The painting of the scenery in the "Tabor Grand," Denver, was the work of his brush. <br><br>He came to Russell, Kansas, in 1878, being one of the pioneer settlers there. In 1881 he was at Cheyenne, Wyoming, and while there his assistant became the object of a rowdy attack from a number of cowboys and freighters. Mr. Dawson went to his rescue and a blow meant for his assistant struck him in the head and caused his death at age 35.</span></div> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">&nbsp;</p> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt">Next time you are over in the Parlor, take the time to admire the Dawson paintings, which are hung in the niches on either side of the fireplace. In lieu of paying a fee to use the space, rather the artists pay a commission to St. Luke's each time a piece is sold. This money is put into the Fine Arts Fund, which goes towards repair, restoration and acquisition of pieces in our permanent art collection. </span></p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">&nbsp;</p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt">The scope of our collection is vast, with a wide variety of art in various mediums (paintings, sculpture, photographs, textiles and so on), and great care is taken to manage and document its status. When a piece is in need of repair, it is given priority as funds become available.</span></p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">&nbsp;</p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt">Recently, several paintings that have most recently hung in the Parlor were sent to St. Mark's Art Restoration to be cleaned and&nbsp;repaired. The pair of paintings by artist George Dawson were in particularly sad shape, with years of accumulated grime, damaged canvases and frames. After a long and tedious restoration process, the two paintings have now been returned to St. Luke's. What a thrill it is to see their true beauty restored! Details that had once been obscured are now visible. The tones are jewel-like, and the gilt frames simply gleam. </span></p> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">&nbsp;</p> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt">According to "A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans", written and compiled by William E. Connelley, George F. Dawson was born at Whitehall, Illinois, in 1846. He spent his early life there and in 1861, enlisted in an Illinois Infantry Regiment, seeing active service throughout the war. He took up the profession of sign writer and scenic painter after the war, and in </span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt">that profession he traveled all over the western states and territories and was employed particularly in painting scenery in opera houses. The painting of the scenery in the "Tabor Grand," Denver, was the work of his brush. <br><br>He came to Russell, Kansas, in 1878, being one of the pioneer settlers there. In 1881 he was at Cheyenne, Wyoming, and while there his assistant became the object of a rowdy attack from a number of cowboys and freighters. Mr. Dawson went to his rescue and a blow meant for his assistant struck him in the head and caused his death at age 35.</span></div> <p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">&nbsp;</p> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt">Next time you are over in the Parlor, take the time to admire the Dawson paintings, which are hung in the niches on either side of the fireplace.
