Discussion at the June Board of Stewards meeting helped view the pros and cons of pursuing a long range plan for St. Luke’s facilities. St. Lukes is fortunate to have an extensive permanent collection of art in a variety of forms to inspire and enrich the lives of all who enter our church. Oils, watercolors, stitchery, engravings, sculpture, prints, photographs and multi-media works are all a part of our vast collection, given by many generations of generous members and friends. The most prominent piece in our collection is the Charles Umlauf sculpture in our courtyard, Teach All Nations (pictured), which was commissioned and dedicated in 1966. St. Lukes is priviliged to own three other Umlauf sculptures, in addition to this one. Activities Blood Drives Health/Rec Home Exercise Classes Lamar Parking Scouting UCAL Sports Support Groups UCAL Sports St. Luke’s hosts baseball, soccer and basketball teams in the UCAL (United Church Athletic League) sports league. Teams include players with ages ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade. The St. Luke’s teams play other church teams such as St. John’s, River Oaks Baptist, West University Methodist and AOS. Veritas is St. Lukes newest choir, founded in summer 2006. This is a choir for men, and we lead our Sunday worship services on a monthly basis. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. in room B243. Veritas is directed by Sid Davis; for more information, contact Sid at 713-402-5021. About our Choir As Veritas is a fairly new choir at St. Lukes, were building traditions together as we grow. We sing in worship at the 8:30 and 9:45 a.m. services on the last Sunday of each month (with a summer break). There are no robes to wear, rather, we don dark slacks and navy blazers for performing, complete with a Veritas tie. KIDS HOPE USA is a national organization that recruits and provides mentors for at-risk elementary school students. St. Luke’s members are involved in two ways. First, our members volunteer to serve as Mentors to students at Briarmeadow Charter School (of Houston Independent School District). Mentors meet with their student for at least one hour per week during regular school hours. This one-to-one relationship improves academic skills and often provides the student with a meaningful, adult role model. Second, some of our members serve as a Prayer Partners. A Prayer Partner commits to praying for an assigned mentor-child team, and typically prays for the child’s academic success and growth of the mentor-student relationship. Second Saturday Serving The second Saturday of every month, our entire Church family volunteers for deserving organizations in our community - Second Saturday Serving (SSS). We meet at the church at 1:00 for prayer, project sign-up and send off. We’ll finish at 4:30. Projects include working at Christian Community Service Center Hospitality Apartments Bonita House of Hope Open Door Mission Star of Hope SEARCH Note: There will be no SSS in July or August! The Bible tells us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) and that every good and perfect gift is from above (James 1:17). We are each gifted individuals. God knew the plans He had for us when He created us, plans to prosper us and not to harm us, to give us a hope and a future! (Jer 29:11). He then gave us a unique set of spiritual gifts, passions and experiences that equips each of us individually to fulfill our purpose here on Earth. God created us perfectly for our callings. And when we let Him use our gifts, mistakes and experiences, we begin to feel His hope and that there is a future for us. It’s incredible, utterly amazing, that God can intertwine and use all of our experiences and relationships.
