In addition to Sunday morning classes and small groups, below are monthly activities and special events are offered. Those involved in our programs call themselves “Mainstreamers” as persons “living in the mainstream of life.”

Ongoing Activities and Special Events

Call 713-402-5087 to reserve your spot for all events.

Mainstreamer Day Program and Lunch - Enjoy a wonderful time of fellowship and enrichment at these meetings on the second Thursday of each month, except July.

Silver Circle - Senior Adults meet on the 4th Wednesday each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Canterbury Hall at the Gethsemane Campus.  Join the group in a morning of games and conversation. Lunch buffet ($5) and birthday celebrations at noon.  For reservations and information contact Betsy Evans 281-565-0348.

Mainstreamer Day Trips - Each month the group gathers to visit a historically or culturally significant place. Travel is by Precinct Four bus or by church bus, which leave from the St. Luke’s parking lot.  The day trip always includes a stop for lunch. Costs vary, depending on the trip.

Theatre and Music Events - On occasion, we attend theatre and music events. We have lunch at an area restaurant before the performance. Transportation is provided from the church parking lot. Prices include your theatre ticket, gratuities and transportation, with lunch as an additional cost.

Line Dancing - You will find this happy group gathering every Monday afternoon, with instructor, Bob Bedient, to enjoy the social and exercise benefits of dancing. Cost is $30 for each 10-week session. Call 713-402-5008 for dates and location.

Other Services

Medical Equipment Lending - Senior Adult Ministries maintains a limited assortment of used medical equipment that is available, free of charge, for members of the congregation to use on a short-term basis. Items include wheelchairs, walkers, shower and tub chairs, and portable commodes. We also accept donations of these items that are in usable condition. Any items not suitable for lending are donated to other non-profit groups.  Call Marlys Barry at 713-402-5008 for information.

AARP Defensive Driving - St. Luke’s hosts the AARP Safe Driving program for insurance reduction for persons 50 and older. Reservations are required. Contact 713-402-5087 to schedule. You can expect to learn current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn adjustments to accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time. Registration is required. Cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for others.

Joys and Concerns - Our volunteers help keep in touch with the senior adults of our congregation by sending  birthday cards to those 80 years and older. Caring Ministries strive to give each of our mobility-challenged members a personal connection to the church through periodic visits and telephone calls. In addition they offer Holy Communion during the Lenten season, deliver poinsettias during Christmastime, and send out monthly mailings to our Friends at Home.
Senior Adult Newsletter - A monthly newsletter is published with upcoming events. If you would like to be added to the mailing list contact Adult Ministries at 713-402-5139.

Extended Travel - Occasionally, longer trips are offered, sponsored by either St. Luke's or by the Fellowship of Older Adult Ministries of the Texas Conference.

Retreats and Special Events - Both Senior Adult Ministries of St. Luke’s and the Fellowship of Older Adult Ministries of the Texas Conference of the Methodist Church sponsor events of interest to older adults. Periodic events focusing on healthful living and spiritual enrichment are offered. Details are published well in advance of each event.
