Chancel Bells

[back to fine arts home]

Ephesians 5:19
Speak to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your heart to the Lord.

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church began its handbell program in 1986 with a three-octave set of bells and is now fortunate to have two completely separate five-octave sets of English handbells, plus a five-octave set of handchimes. All the bells were given as memorial gifts to St. Luke’s Church and were cast by Schulmerich Carillons of Sellersville, Pennsylvania. The largest bell weighs 7.3 pounds and is 10 inches in diameter, and the smallest bell weighs only 9 ounces and is 2 inches in diameter.

Handbell choirs from St. Luke’s have participated in many annual festivals and, in addition to worship and concerts at St. Luke’s, have performed for Dickens on the Strand in Galveston, the Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market, the Museum of Fine Arts, Feb-Fest, and for area churches.

chancel bells rehearsalAbout Us

The Chancel Bells are made up of 13 very enthusiastic ringers. We come from various musical and vocational backgrounds. The one thing we have in common is our love for making music with bells and chimes

Rehearsal Information

5:45 – 7:00 PM on Wednesday evenings (September through May) in Rm C263 -264 (2nd floor). Our rehearsals are open to anyone who would like to see what bell ringing is like or who just want to listen.

How to be a Member
If you are interested in ringing handbells please contact the director, we have very few ring spots open, but we are always looking for subs or part-time ringers. The ability to read music is a must; handbell experience is a plus, but not necessary.
