Renewing Hope: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for February 28, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service.

WE PRAY: A PERSONAL PRAYER
Holy Spirit,
I need your guidance. I read the words of Scripture, and want to follow them and apply them to my life, but I know that they only have power to really guide me when they are enlivened by you. Sometimes, I hear your voice speaking to me… or at least I think it is your voice. I sense your nudges and promptings… or at least it feels to me like they are from you. Other times, when I come to a fork in the road, a difficult decision, it seems neither decision is right, and I have to step forward trusting in your power to take even my worst decisions and use them for your glory.
Come Holy Spirit today. Empower me to accomplish your purposes. Equip me to do your ministry. Comfort me in the places I am hurting. Enliven me with your Holy Breath. Sanctify me a little more than yesterday, so I might bear your fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
I know that I can’t do anything significant by my own power and strength, so I simply make myself available for use by you.
In the holy name of my brother Jesus, I pray.
Amen

KEY VERSE FOR THE WEEK
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.— John 14:26  Read the whole text for the sermon here: John 14: 15-27

QUESTIONS FOR CONVERSATION
Where have you experienced the Holy Spirit at work in your life to guide, equip, or produce fruit in your life?

SOME THOUGHTS TO SHARE
This week in worship, we will talk about the God who continues to act in us and through us – the Holy Spirit of God. Of all the persons of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is the hardest for us to comprehend. Rather than talk about “Who is the Holy Spirit?” we are going to ask the question a different way: “What does the Holy Spirit do?” This is the “so what” question of faith. I hope you come and worship with us.
I hope you will come to the church conference meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, February 28, in the Sanctuary. We will vote on whether to move forward on our parking garage project in partnership with St. John’s School.

PRAYER CALENDAR

Third Sunday in Lent | February 28
Jesus, we couldn’t ask for a better friend. You know every thing about us and even so, you love and journey with us. Make us mindful to nurture our relationship with you. In your Holy name we pray. Amen.
Action: Tell someone about your friend Jesus.

Monday | February 29
Jesus, you are Lord over all creation and reconciler between God and His creation. Remind us that we are not our own, but we belong to you. Amen.
Action: Invite a friend to a “Leap Day” walk in the park.

Tuesday | March 1
Holy Spirit, who intercedes on our behalf, we are grateful for your immeasurable gift of grace. When we are not able to articulate our prayers, we rest assured that God is already listening and responding to our prayers. Amen.
Action: Secretly do something nice for someone today at home, work, school, or in your neighborhood.

Wednesday | March 2
Compassionate God, we pray for all who are experiencing brokenness in their lives. May the Holy Spirit bring merciful, healing grace and renewing hope through Jesus Christ our Lord, Savior and great physician. Amen.
Action: Send your favorite physician, nurse or medical/nursing assistant a note thanking them for being an instrument of God’s healing grace.

Thursday | March 3
God, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to remind us of your unending love and grace; and, for reminding and equipping us to live and love as Jesus. Amen.
Action: Set your alarm for a convenient time today and let it serve as a reminder that God loves you and is present with you to help you throughout the day.

Friday | March 4
Sometimes we are like wayward children. So, gracious Heavenly Father, hold our hands and walk with us. Keep us close and grow our sense of awareness and the nearness of you in all that we do. Amen.
Action: Trace the outline of your hand on a piece of paper and keep it close to you today so that you may be aware of God’s hands holding your own.

Saturday | March 5
Holy God, It isn’t because we want to earn your favor, but out of deep love and gratitude to you, we give ourselves to you for your service. Amen.
Action: Tell someone who serves you in any way today how much you appreciate what they do for you.
