Senior Adults Outreach
2 Corinthians 8:11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means.
Senior Adult Ministries offers information and services to the St. Luke's community and to the community at large. The senior adults of our church family also actively participate in outreach service to the community, both in hands-on activities and through contributions of needed items and monetary contributions. Ministering to the needs of others helps make life worth living and gives importance to older adults, whose time, knowledge and experience go a long way in helping to meet the needs of others. For more information about any of our Senior Outreach programs listed below, please contact at (713) 402-5008.
Home Helpers is a service provided by a group of men from the congregation, who are available upon request, to do small home repair jobs. The service is a ministry, and is free of charge. Recipients may make a donation to Home Helpers, which goes to purchase materials. Request for this service is made through the Office of Senior Adult Ministries, and the Home Helpers make contact directly to arrange the work. Call 713-402-5008.
Kids Hope USA
Kids Hope USA is a national organization that recruits and provides mentors for “at-risk” elementary school students. St. Luke’s members volunteer to serve as Mentors to students at Briarmeadow Charter School and Sutton Elementary, meeting with their student for at least one hour per week during regular school hours. This one-to-one relationship improves academic skills and often provides the student with a meaningful, adult role model.
Another way our members can serve is by being Prayer Partners, who commit to praying for an assigned Mentor/Student team. This volunteer typically prays for the student’s academic success and growth of the Mentor/Student relationship.
A program of Outreach Ministry, Kids Hope USA welcomes volunteers of all ages, and is a great 'fit' for Senior Adults. Director, Karen McCarver, helps mentors and students arrange their schedules in order to nurture the relationship. If you would like to participate in this ministry in any way, please contact Karen at or 713-402-5152.
Medical Equipment Lending
Senior Adult Ministries maintains a limited assortment of used medical equipment that is available, free of charge, for members of the congregation to use on a short-term basis. Items include wheelchairs, walkers, shower and tub chairs, and portable commodes. We also accept donations of these items that are in usable condition. Any items not suitable for lending are donated to other non-profit groups.
Joys and Concerns
Volunteers help keep in touch with the senior adults of our congregation by sending cards at times of illness or grief, and birthday cards to those 80 years and older.
