All the Good, All the Bad

by Andrew Howard, Class of 2018 I was waiting for my prayers to be answered. I was praying for a sign from God to help me really know that, without a doubt, he was real. And that day came during Fall Retreat when God shot me with all the truth of all the ways that he had been in my life. Maybe he made me to talk to people who really need his grace and forgiveness. I run track—barefoot, and when asked why, I say that God created us naked and that is our best form. Everyone has God [...]

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. WE PRAY: A PERSONAL PRAYER “I am tired. I am weak. I am worn.”  “Sometimes, I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain. And then the Holy Spirit, revives my soul again…” “When you’re weary. Feelin’ small…” O God, apparently, I am not the only one who sometimes feels depleted and discouraged, burned out and worn out. The songwriter expresses it so well. When that happens, I don’t feel your joy bubbling up inside me. I need [...]

He Restores My Soul

by Reverend Bill Denham Every hospital visit is unique. Different rooms, patients, medical issues, outcomes. One of the things that some special lay men and women do is volunteer to visit hospitalized persons in the Medical Center. These volunteers enter the hospital room knowing that they represent not only St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, but also the healing hands and voice of Jesus the Christ. Before entering a hospital room the volunteer washes his/her hands and, more often than not, offers up a silent prayer, asking God to be with them in this visit. These men and women [...]

He Will Provide

by Patrick Long-Quian When I started senior year in high school, the number one thing people told me was to get my college applications finished early. I tried, but that just didn’t happen. The stress started piling up; the stress of deciding what I was going to do for the rest of my life at the age of 18, the stress of how I was going to pay for this monumental step in my education and life. In the fall of 2015 my voice teacher told me that someone from a music school was coming to Houston for [...]

Prayers: The Real Work: Inside-Out Habits for April 3, 2016 with Dr. Tom Pace

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service.   WE PRAY: A PERSONAL PRAYER O God, In the days after Easter, the disciples huddled in that same upper room in Jerusalem, and there they prayed. They waited and prayed to be clothed with power from on high. Instead, O God, I find myself working and fretting, worrying and wondering and wandering. Yes, you know I am praying, too. But somehow, my prayers feel different from those prayers of the disciples. Too often, I think that the important stuff is the “real [...]

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. WE PRAY: A PERSONAL PRAYER O Jesus, I pray to you today… Every morning I begin with an address to God my creator and parent, but I know that every time I pray, it is through you and in your name and character, Jesus. I imagine you, sitting there on the couch across from me, leaning forward, looking into my eyes and heart as I pray. I can see the weathering of the world on your cheeks, the burden [...]

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in service and generosity. WE PRAY: A PERSONAL PRAYER O Lord, my God… when I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hands have made… Who am I that you are mindful of me? And yet, you have made me little lower than the angels. I can have a conversation with you, the maker of the universe, and share my whole heart with you. Wow. As I pray this morning, the figures of trees are beginning to take shape in the [...]

The Times Are Changing: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for February 7, 2016

2017-03-28T14:58:00-05:00February 7th, 2016|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service.   WE PRAY: A PERSONAL PRAYER Gracious God, You know, God, that I have always been one of those pushing for movement, for things to change. I have been one who was ready to lean forward. I used to walk around singing “The times, they are a changin…”.   But as I am older, I am less ready for change. I yearn for peace. Tranquility. Now, I find myself humming “Peace like a river.” I find myself more interested in quiet than I am in [...]

Perspectacles: Inside-Out Habits for December 11, 2015 with Dr. Tom Pace

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER Gracious God, I need to put on some perspectacles today. Some problems seem like mountains, when they are really challenges that give life meaning and purpose. Some situations (yes, even some people) seem like interruptions, when they really are opportunities to serve or to share. Some days go on and on, and seem like they will never end. Why do I want to wish away the few days you have given me to enjoy and [...]

Questions and Answers: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for December 6, 2015

2017-03-28T14:58:15-05:00December 6th, 2015|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in service and generosity. A PERSONAL PRAYER How long, O Lord, before you answer my prayer? I have prayed it. More than once. Over and over again. Sometimes, I just wear out praying it, and I give up on it altogether. But the issue still remains and plagues me, and I am not sure what else to do with it. It seems impossible to ignore it and move on, so I just begin to pray it again. Are you answering my prayer [...]
