Planning for Hurricanes – Centerpoint’s Kenny Mercado speaks to UMM July 14
Speaking on experiences in emergency planning for hurricane type events, Centerpoint Energy’s Kenny Mercado will be the featured speaker at the dinner meeting of the St. Luke’s United Methodist Men on Tuesday, July 14 at 6:15 p.m. in the Hines Baker Room. A longtime St. Luke’s member, Mr. Mercado is Division Senior Vice President, working with the Advanced Metering System and has been with Centerpoint Energy for 24 years.
“I’m responsible for the full deployment of our digital, automated metering and communication system,” Kenny said as he described the content of his presentation. “I would like to better prepare our members on how to be ready and what to do as we get closer to hurricane season.” He will also discuss the local experiences in 2009 when he was in charge of Centerpoint’s single largest recovery from a natural disaster in the more than 100 years history in the electric utility business.
He holds BSEE and MSIE degrees from the University of Houston as well as an EMBA from Texas A&M University.

During the year, in addition to regular monthly dinner (or occasionally luncheon) meetings with a timely speaker, UMM sponsors and/or supports the Valentine Dinner and Program honoring spouses, grilling of hot dogs for the Souper Bowl, the “Fore Him” golf tournament, the Pure Sounds spaghetti dinners and Pumpkin Patch project and many other church related service projects.
