How to Belong

Welcome to St. Luke’s!
If you are looking for a church home, St. Luke’s provides you the opportunity to participate in passionate worship, faith-forming relationships, and ministries that make a difference.

How To Join
We invite you to join our church family! New members are received:

·         During any Sunday during worship services. At the end of each worship service, you will be invited to join our church by coming forward during the Hymn of Commitment (last hymn). Please fill out the “How to Join” pew card and bring the card with you when you join.

·         In between worship services on Sundays by appointment. Please contact Kay Towns at ktowns@stlukes-hou.org or 713-402-5009.

·         At Life Together class. Please contact Mary Alaniz at malaniz@stlukes-hou.org or 713-402-5015.

·         For special situations, our ministry team is happy to receive new members at different times and places by request (e.g., nursing homes, hospitals, etc.)

I'm not Methodist; can I still join St. Luke's?
Absolutely! Many people that join our church are from other faiths. If you have been baptized, we accept your baptism and your belief in Jesus Christ and warmly welcome you.

I’d like to join, but what if I have not been baptized?
For adults who have not been baptized, but would like to join St. Luke's U.M.C., we'd love to help you take this important step. If you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and desire to serve Him as your Lord as part of the church, we invite you to be part of a brief ceremony of this outward sign of God's inward love for us. Although it is so affirming to all of us when adults step forward during the service to accept the gift of God's grace, if you prefer, we can arrange for your baptism with a smaller group at another time in the Chapel (contact Kay Towns mailto:ktowns@stlukes-hou.org at 713-402-5009).

Where can I learn more about St. Luke’s?
Every month we offer Life Together dinner class led by Senior Pastor Dr. Tom Pace, which is especially for new members and prospective members.  Here you'll meet staff members, develop new friendships, learn about St. Luke's mission and vision.  For reservations contact Mary Alaniz at malaniz@stlukes-hou.org or 713-402-5015.

Do I have to attend a class to join St. Luke's?
We invite all members to attend Life Together class. While it is helpful to take this class before joining, you can wait until after you’ve joined to attend. The only prerequisite for joining our church is your belief in Jesus Christ and your willingness to support the church with your membership vows.

What is expected of me when I Join?
We hope all will attend Life Together class either before joining or soon after. In addition to supporting the church with your vows, we want our members to support our vision, which is "to make a difference…in spiritual lives, in relationships, and in the city and world."

What are the Membership Vows?

·         Do you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and pledge your allegiance to his kingdom?

·         Do you profess the Christian faith as contained in the Old and New Testaments as your rule of faith and practice?

·         Will you, according to the grace given you, live a Christian life?

If you make these vows your solemn promise, then you are eligible to take this final vow of membership to St. Luke's United Methodist Church:

·         Will you be loyal to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and uphold it with your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness?
