We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service.A PERSONAL PRAYERGracious God,Thanksgiving behind us. Christmas still ahead of us. We are now officially in “the holidays.” It is going to be a wonderful time. Our home will be decorated. Our family will gather. Our church will hear and sing beautiful music. Children will dress up in bathrobes and magically become shepherds (or shepherdesses, of course.) But today, as we head into the season, I pray for those for whom the holidays are not so easy. My father-in-law shared with me that as he worked at [...]

Life With Father

by: Wayne White“Casual agnostics” would be the way I remember my parents growing up. We did not go to church, matters of faith were not important or discussed, so baptism was something that never took place. My search for faith was a strange process. I knew I wanted a connection to God, but did not know the path. So I looked into Judaism, Buddhism, and Catholicism, all the while feeling this pull towards God. I was married in the Catholic Church, attended Mass and raised our daughter in that tradition, but as the pain of divorce and remarriage became [...]

Overflow of Gratitude: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for November 20, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service.A PERSONAL PRAYERO God, Thank you. Today is one of those days when my gratitude overflows. I am so grateful for family and friends, for work and play, for laughter and tears, for big overwhelming joys and small moments of joy. Funny, those things were around on other days when I wasn’t so thankful. What changed, God?I was reading the Bible this week and came across the story of the feeding of the 5,000, how you had two fish and five loaves. You [...]

Baby David

2017-03-28T14:55:49-05:00November 20th, 2016|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

by: Rev. David Horton  With Advent quickly approaching I am noticing more than usual the babies in our church. Babies and pregnant ladies seem to be around every corner at Gethsemane. New life is in abundance. One of the newborns is named David. I am partial to the name. David’s chubby cheeks are like flotation devices. He is the quietest little baby. He stays in worship with his family and he never utters a peep. He loves to be passed around during worship. During the opening hymn he’ll be with his mom, but during the sermon he’ll be in the arms [...]

I’m Sorry

2017-03-28T14:55:50-05:00November 13th, 2016|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

Saying sorry has always been easy for me, too easy in fact. I had no idea how often I threw the words “I’m sorry” around in such an inappropriate way until a beloved family member pointed it out. A few years ago, my great aunt, who truly is GREAT as well as being my grandmother’s much younger, much cooler sister, was visiting my family. She sat at the island in my kitchen watching the craziness of our lives in only the manner she can. After observing for a while, she asked me in her sage way, “Why do [...]

The Discipline of Kindness: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for November 13, 2016

2017-03-28T14:55:52-05:00November 13th, 2016|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER O God, I pray for humility today. I am sad when I have friendships strained by our differing viewpoints—political, or religious, or cultural, or otherwise. My convictions matter deeply to me. I will stand by them. I think they are right. I think I am right. I am proud of those convictions, God—maybe too proud. Forgive me, God, for my arrogance and self-righteousness. Help me to embrace what Jesus taught, that the relationships matter [...]

Of Alabaster Cities

I voted early this year. It was an interesting experience, knowing that many of those in line with me were voting differently than I was. In contrast to what we see on the news, it was a very civil and friendly experience. There was nice conversation in the line about the Texans and the weather and the upcoming weekend. The people working the polling place were happy and very pleasant, both to the voters and to one another. The guy who gave me my “I Voted” sticker was absolutely jolly. There was no doubt that all of us, [...]

The Rich in Heart: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for November 4, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER O God, Sometimes, it is hard to submit to life, to accept life as it is, not as I would have it to be. When things don’t go my way, I find myself either demanding change or giving up. Neither is the right attitude. God, give me the grace to accept the people you have put into my life as the people for whom I should care, and to whom I should submit. Give me the audacity [...]
