Overwhelmed

2017-08-30T16:16:21-05:00August 30th, 2017|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

For some, it is a literal term. Waters come pouring in and they can’t stop them. They watch the damage to home and possessions. Some wonder where they will live and, oh my, how they will pay for it. It's almost too much, as it seems the worst is over, and then the waters move from central city to the suburbs, with downstream flooding still in the future. It is just so much. For most, it is emotionally overwhelming. Some remain afraid of what is to come when the rivers continue to rise. For those of us without [...]

A Stephen Ministry Testimony

2017-08-25T09:40:02-05:00August 25th, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

On a warm, summer day in the recent past, I experienced one of the most traumatic events in my life. The events of that day resulted in several subsequent occurrences that led to my eventual rock bottom. In a matter of a few months, I lost my professional license, lucrative business, marriage, daily duties as a father of a precious little girl, millions in potential career earnings, and reputation. I often describe these incidents as my descent into Dante’s Inferno. Struggling with the thought of suicide and suffering in the agonizing realm of depression, I turned to my [...]

Storms, Worship Info, and Hospitality

2017-08-24T14:04:56-05:00August 24th, 2017|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

Friends, as the rainstorm approaches, please watch our website for information about worship on Sunday… A PERSONAL PRAYER Gracious God,The storm approaches, and deluge and floods threaten. We find ourselves anxious about safety, about possessions, about comfort, about those we love. Pour over us with your love, and take away our anxiety, and put our trust in you. We pray for all who are affected by this storm, and that you might show us how to respond, putting our faith to work in love. (Galatians 5:6)God, turn our attention to others. Help us to put aside our own needs, that [...]

Beyond the Welcome Mat

2017-08-23T15:40:11-05:00August 23rd, 2017|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

We've talking about hospitality at St. Luke’s – Open Hearts and Open Doors. Hospitality means so much more than a nice table setting or a welcome mat. It is a deep desire to connect with others. It is a focus on the other person rather than ourselves. It is a willingness to be inconvenienced, or even put one’s self at risk, to meet another’s needs. It is a desire for there to be no “us” and “them,” but only an “us.” It is a willingness to let others into our private space, and more importantly, a willingness to [...]

I’m not like these folks

2017-08-18T08:59:18-05:00August 18th, 2017|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

A PERSONAL PRAYER God, Sometimes, I am lonely.  Sometimes, I feel like I don’t fit in, alienated from those around me. Sometimes, I don’t fit with the progressives or the conservatives, the rich and powerful or the poor and marginalized, the church folk or the secular folk, the Bible thumpers or the Bible deniers. Oh, I know I am privileged, God. But nonetheless, that feeling keeps returning in moments of uncertainty. Strangely, as I talk to others, I hear almost everyone say the same thing. Why is that? Your Scripture reminds me that I am simply on a sojourn, that this [...]

Student Vision Night

2017-08-14T14:29:47-05:00August 14th, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

Every year in August we kick off the year in Student Ministries with a special event called Vision Night. This is an evening to hear about the amazing things that God has been doing in students' and families' lives over the past year, and to learn about what is ahead. It is an exciting time in St. Luke's Student Ministry! Last year 450 students participated in a Student Ministry activity. Our students participated in dozens of service projects that impacted tens of thousands of Houstonians. Every week Student Ministry had 21 different small groups. Each year hundreds of [...]

You Belong!

2017-08-14T14:24:16-05:00August 14th, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

The Belonging is a worship community. We gather every Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Gethsemane Campus of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. The Belonging is a growing community. We don't mean numbers or money or buildings. We mean growing in relationship with God and with one another, all with the love of Jesus. We meet in small groups for prayer, Bible study, food, fun, and life. The Belonging is a family community. We believe there is little difference between church and family, and that goes for every age. We put a lot of effort and prayer into [...]

We Make Friends, We Give Ourselves Away

2017-08-14T14:18:18-05:00August 14th, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

You can change one child’s life through KIDS HOPE USA! Hubie Fix, a KIDS HOPE mentor at Sutton Elementary School shares his story. “Long story short, you get a friend in KIDS HOPE. My journey with Henry started in the fall of 2015. We hit it off right away because of our mutual interest in sports, video games and learning. Each week we read, practice math flash cards, play board games and soccer or football. In our initial sessions it took some time for us to come out of our shells. We would read one or two books [...]

Sadie’s Baptism – by Rebecca Alsup

2017-08-11T14:29:16-05:00August 11th, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

At St. Luke’s, we make friends. I confess I have not always given this habit the weight it deserves.  I knew friendships were a beautiful outcome of church participation, and I am ever grateful for the friends I have made here – some of whom I have known for nearly 20 years! For some reason, though, “making friends” did not always seem as sacred an endeavor as praying, studying the Bible, and so on. Having fun with friends seemed more frivolous than holy, but I am learning that godly friendships are so much more than just a perk [...]

Meaning and Misery

2017-08-11T14:25:16-05:00August 11th, 2017|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

A PERSONAL PRAYER God, I want, I want, I want. Sometimes it is “stuff.”  …a motorcycle, and the sense of freedom that comes with it. (Thank you for giving me a wife who loves me and forbids such a thing.) …a house in the mountains, with horses, and someone to take care of it. And while you are at it, throw in a private jet to get me there on the weekend and back in time to preach. Just dreaming, God. Yada yada yada…Sometimes, it is something else I dream of.  …security, a bank account big enough that I don’t have to [...]
