Putting Faith to Work in Love This week on Mission in Wilmore, Kentucky – by Joseph Patty

2017-07-21T09:32:52-05:00July 21st, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

This week we took 23 high school students and seven adults on a mission trip to Wilmore, Kentucky with an organization called AdventureServe. Our primary project was to repair a roof for Penny, a single mother of four who is trying to put three of her kids through college. The roof leaked so badly that the ceiling caved on the inside. She is possibly one of the sweetest people on earth and has spent hours getting to know us and baking us cookies. We also rotated our students through a series of “mystery trips,” where we partnered with [...]

So much pain…

2017-07-21T09:28:32-05:00July 21st, 2017|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

A PERSONAL PRAYER              Gracious God, I thank you God for my marriage, for the gift of a partner in life, for a love that is real and gritty and resilient.     Here is what I want: I want so much to be a man of my word, to be trustworthy, to keep all of my promises. I want to feel loved and appreciated, wanted and respected. I want loneliness to go away and to experience real intimacy. God, thank you for offering me what I want. I pray that you would show me how to grow my marriage so that my wife and I [...]

How Do I Honor Him?

2017-07-07T09:10:51-05:00July 7th, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

I remember the day that my dad left. I remember sitting in his lap as he tearfully confessed the words that would be my first-ever heartbreak. I remember thinking that divorce was a thing that happened to other kids–not me. I remember the way he looked as he walked out of my home forever. I remember sleepless nights with me, my sister, and my mom huddled closely together in the same bed the first week of his absence. I remember losing a unique brand of childhood innocence that day. How do I honor this person? When I look [...]

Complicated Relationship

2017-07-07T09:04:40-05:00July 7th, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

Loving God, you who are the perfect parent, I remember my mother, when I was small, involving me in the speech therapy program she operated in our home, so she could be both mother and professional at the same time. I remember going to the special needs summer camp with her in the summer. I think I can remember her stroking the bridge of my nose between my eyes when I was very little, soothing me to go to sleep. As a teenager, I remember getting up every morning to go to school, finding cooked breakfast on a hot plate [...]

VBS Part 2: Reaching Out with Shoes that Grow

2017-06-30T08:53:03-05:00June 30th, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

With child-like faith and a natural compassion, VBS goers saw a need, understood how to meet it, and did something. Some even set up lemonade stands to raise money for other kids’ shoes – kids they will never meet. Through their generosity, the kids raised $7,665 that helped purchase 511 pairs of shoes.  While I could fill a BIG book with all the ways I heard, saw and experienced our children, teens and adult leaders growing in God’s super hero powers throughout our VBS week, there was a poignant experience I wish to share. At the end of [...]

Stop for a day and trust God

2017-06-30T08:38:05-05:00June 30th, 2017|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

A PERSONAL PRAYERGod,Who do I think I am? Some days, I must think I am in charge of everything, and if I don’t do it, the world will fall apart. Forgive me, God, for forgetting that you created the world without me, and it can go on without me. I can’t seem to stop and trust you. Some days, I am a slave to my calendar and my task list, to the lifestyle I have chosen. I determine my self-worth based on how much I get done. Forgive me, God, for returning to slavery when you have set me free. Some days, I [...]

VBS Part 1: Hero Central = God-Centered

2017-06-23T09:16:50-05:00June 23rd, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

What do you get when you add 204 teen volunteers, 50 adult volunteers, 600 campers and 2 crazy New Zealanders? VBS 2017! St. Luke’s became Hero Central, and friendly welcomers ushered each new and returning family to our first campus-wide VBS including the new Johnson Building. We launched right in with spirited singing at the first big group time with The Lads in Fellowship Hall. Teen helpers from Westheimer and Gethsemane served each day and increased the “cool factor” as they assisted in all activities. The VBS teachers raved about the teen helpers: “We LOVE our teen helpers! [...]

God’s Name in Vain

2017-06-23T09:04:30-05:00June 23rd, 2017|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

A PERSONAL PRAYER God, I pray that I do not use your name in vain. May I not use your name to make a bigger church that makes us look more successful and relevant, but instead use your name only for your agenda of gathering all of your children to you, and being an instrument of your kingdom. May I not use your name to promote religion, but rather faith and a relationship with you. May I not use your name to grow my business so I will be richer, or get my candidate elected, or promote the interests of my [...]

A Complete Community

2017-06-22T09:52:11-05:00June 22nd, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

St. Luke’s Gethsemane is nestled in the midst of the Gulfton community that has been selected as one of the Mayor’s “Complete Communities.” This neighborhood, with its first generation immigrants and refugees, is considered to be one of the most diverse in the city of Houston. The Mayor’s "Complete Communities" is a pilot program designed to revitalize under-resourced areas while allowing residents to stay in their neighborhoods. This is exciting news and something that has been needed for a very long time. The initiative will work towards creating “complete” communities: neighborhoods that are safe, affordable, and healthy; have [...]

Dear Caroline

2017-06-16T09:11:16-05:00June 16th, 2017|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

Dear Caroline, Today you’re the size of a small pumpkin, like the ones you, your mom, and I will paint funny faces on and put on the doorstep the day before Halloween. We’ll have a good time, the four of us. Yes, I’m counting the cat. Today is also Father’s Day. I guess this is my first Father’s Day as a father. You should know I have mixed feelings about this, because it means your arrival is coming within the month, and I’m not ready. Sure, we have all the gadgets and carriers to bring you home, and your [...]
