I was made aware of St. Luke’s Church when I met Joe Blanton, my husband to be. The St. Luke’s family was holding services in the auditorium of Lamar Senior High School. On one of our dates, I accompanied Joe to Lamar High School where St. Luke’s was having a church conference and Joe was scheduled to attend. I met many new members of St. Luke’s who invited me to join. I attended Sunday services and later joined the St. Luke’s choir as a gift surprise to Joe’s parents. Some months later I joined St. Luke’s and Joe and I [...]

My husband, Mark, and I met in Dallas in 1984 after graduating from college at Texas A&M University.  We were engaged the following year and began the process of planning a wedding and joining our families and our lives.  Mark was raised in a Southern Baptist church, and I was raised Lutheran.  We both experienced the tradition of church on Sundays, every Sunday.  Our families were entrenched in the lives of their respective churches, as were we.   Choosing a church home was a challenge for us because we were loyal to our previous denominations, [...]

As newlyweds, we visited St. Luke’s in 1971.  It did not take long to decide that this was the right place for us.  We were impressed by the number of young families.  Through the years, we have been involved in numerous areas of the church which has given us opportunity to grow spiritually and to get to know so many people from a variety of age groups.  When we talk with potential new members of St. Luke’s at Coffee with the Pastor, we tell them how we could have just gone to worship on Sunday and walked out the [...]

Early in my marriage, my husband and I moved to Houston from Southern California. We knew finding a church home was important and in 1991, after seeing Dr. Moore preach on TV, we decided to try St. Luke's. We immediately loved the church's contagious, vibrant energy. Its large size initially provided us some comforting anonymity. It didn’t take long, however, before we were ready for more--we soon joined the Genesis Sunday school class, signed up for Disciple Bible Study, enrolled our daughters at the day school and got them involved in children’s Sunday School and choirs. One of my first [...]

A Sweet Memory For The Rest of My Life by Jane Williams

Dear Friends, In thinking back to my time with you at St. Luke’s, I hardly know where to begin. My friends and colleagues in the Houston early childhood community were still reeling from the sudden death of our beloved Ella Hawes, the Director of St. Luke’s Day School in the early spring of 1998. That summer I received a call from Benny Vaughan to ask if I would come to St. Luke’s for an interview for Ella’s position. After conferring with my pastor at Westbury UMC, I did interview with the personnel committee. Shortly after that, I talked again with [...]

My husband and I bought my childhood home in Bellaire from my Dad after Mom died and he decided to stay in assisted living. I had grown up at Bellaire Methodist and intended to go back there when we moved to Bellaire and I began working at Texas Heart Institute. At that time I found out that our THI VP’s daughter, Katy, was the assistant choir director at St Luke’s so we went to a service there. The chancel choir was packed in like sardines in the old Sanctuary choir loft and Dr. Pace preached a sermon that included an [...]
