January 11: Spa & Scripture

Brittney Ford, Children’s Council, Children’s Ministries Hospitality Team Lead, VBS Teacher, Member since 2007 Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.” Reflection: This is NOT a Proverbs 31 lesson. I am not using this space to help you grow into a Christian-culture-approved Proverbs 31 woman. In fact, the core message here doesn’t exclude men. Undoubtedly, this is a chapter of Proverbs that we are familiar with, as dozens of books have been written about this chapter, an entire organized ministry has formed around it and it [...]

Trust the Process

God, It has been a crazy week in our country, and we have been saddened yet again by the violence that appears to be the chosen response of many angry people. And yet, as followers of your son, we choose not the way of violence, but the path of peace. We choose not the way of hate and division but the path of love and reconciliation. We choose not the way of the world, but the way of Christ. God, keep your hand fixed securely upon our hearts so that we will not be drawn in by images on television or rhetoric [...]

January 7: Hearing, Seeing, Healing, Feeling

Linda Burch, Member 40+ years, Good Will Class Proverbs 20:12, 27 (NKJV) 12  The hearing ear and the seeing eye,       The Lord made them both. 27  The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord,       Searching all the inner depths of his heart. Reflection: The sky exploded! Spinning black and white circles filled the air before falling to the pavement in front of my car. Then they vanished! What was wrong with my eyes? An ophthalmologist's appointment revealed the "explosion" occurred when a vitreous detachment created a hole in the macula of my left eye. Surgery could [...]

January 6: Walking His Way

Tiffanie Villasana  Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.  Reflection: I was so excited to see us talking about the book of Proverbs this month, and I was bound and determined to talk about something super wise from one of my favorite books of the Bible. My initial reaction was to write on discernment.  Then one morning in early December, I got a phone call from a close family member. She had received some bad news—some life-changing [...]

January 5: Popcorn Paradise

Rachel Fisher, Children’s Ministries Communications Specialist Proverbs 25:16 (NIV) If you find honey, eat just enough—     too much of it, and you will vomit. Reflection: If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, I think I would choose popcorn. Its mouth-watering delight is found in the happiest of places: movie theaters, amusement parks, even draped on Christmas trees. Ever since I was a child, my mom and I have made “good popcorn” on our stovetop popper, complete with a handheld crank and decades of grease build-up. Two tablespoons of olive oil and one-third cup [...]

January 4: A Clean Slate

David Swift Proverbs 28:13, 25 13 Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy. 25… those who trust in the LORD will prosper. Reflection: We all love to find a way to hit reset in our lives. Whether it’s a new job, new relationships, or just the beginning of a new year…getting a fresh start feels good! These opportunities might allow us a clean slate to erase past mistakes, but old habits can often return bringing along the baggage we sought to leave behind. The truth found in Proverbs 28 [...]

2021-01-05T14:03:27-06:00January 1st, 2021|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

God, You tell us in your Scripture that you make all things new. I am anxious to be renewed. I long for renewal physically, emotionally, socially, and most of all spiritually. God, I believe you have a dream for me, for us, for your people in 2021. Help me to be the part of your dream that you intend for me. In the words and spirit of John Wesley, hear this prayer from my heart, said by the people called Methodist at New Year’s for 200 years. I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, [...]

By Tom Pace, Senior Pastor Proverbs 1:1-7 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: 2 For learning about wisdom and instruction,     for understanding words of insight, 3 for gaining instruction in wise dealing,     righteousness, justice, and equity; 4 to teach shrewdness to the simple,     knowledge and prudence to the young— 5 let the wise also hear and gain in learning,     and the discerning acquire skill, wi 6 to understand a proverb and a figure,     the words of the wise and their riddles. 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;     fools despise wisdom [...]

December 31: The Watchnight Service and Covenant Prayer

2020-12-29T11:30:14-06:00December 31st, 2020|All blogs, Daily Devotionals|0 Comments

Methodism's founder, John Wesley, first celebrated a covenant renewal as a "Watch Night" service in 1755. In its original use, the term "Watch Night" referred to a gathering for prayer that could last well into the night or even overnight. For a number of years, Methodists would hold Watch Night services for covenant renewal—a fresh commitment to God. It eventually became tradition to hold this service on New Year's Eve. Watch Night services on New Year's Eve have also become an important part of African-American worship, Methodist and otherwise, because the Emancipation Proclamation would go into effect at midnight [...]
