God of grace and truth,

I am thinking today about all those who serve: waitstaff and police officers, physicians and nurses and sanitation workers, custodians and attorneys, teachers and firefighters, parents and politicians, soldiers and administrative assistants, civil servants and coaches, landscapers and financial planners, and so many many more. When I open my eyes and look around, there are scores of people who give of themselves, paid and volunteer, to make a difference in my life and in the lives of those I care about. God, I take them for granted too often. Grant me the humility to receive their service graciously and humbly, full of gratitude for what they do. I pray for their health and safety and strength and pray that you would bless them and their families and their work.

This weekend, I thank you especially for those who have served our country, who have put themselves at risk to keep me and others from harm. For those who have given their lives doing their duty, my heart overflows with awe and thanksgiving. Let this be a time I remember them and their sacrifice, and hear my prayer that your will for peace and goodwill be done as your kingdom overcomes all the kingdoms of this world.

In the name of the Prince of Peace, Jesus the Christ, I pray. Amen
