We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER Gracious God, I get along with most people. You know that, God. I like most folks, and I try to treat people well, with love and care, most of the time. Or so I like to think. I think I “pursue the things that make for peace.” (Romans 14:19) But now a conflict has arisen, and I am not sure what to do about it. I have tried to just ignore it, manage my life around [...]

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service.A PERSONAL PRAYERGracious God,Thanksgiving behind us. Christmas still ahead of us. We are now officially in “the holidays.” It is going to be a wonderful time. Our home will be decorated. Our family will gather. Our church will hear and sing beautiful music. Children will dress up in bathrobes and magically become shepherds (or shepherdesses, of course.) But today, as we head into the season, I pray for those for whom the holidays are not so easy. My father-in-law shared with me that as he worked at [...]

The Discipline of Kindness: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for November 13, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER O God, I pray for humility today. I am sad when I have friendships strained by our differing viewpoints—political, or religious, or cultural, or otherwise. My convictions matter deeply to me. I will stand by them. I think they are right. I think I am right. I am proud of those convictions, God—maybe too proud. Forgive me, God, for my arrogance and self-righteousness. Help me to embrace what Jesus taught, that the relationships matter [...]

Of Alabaster Cities

I voted early this year. It was an interesting experience, knowing that many of those in line with me were voting differently than I was. In contrast to what we see on the news, it was a very civil and friendly experience. There was nice conversation in the line about the Texans and the weather and the upcoming weekend. The people working the polling place were happy and very pleasant, both to the voters and to one another. The guy who gave me my “I Voted” sticker was absolutely jolly. There was no doubt that all of us, [...]

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. SOME THOUGHTS TO SHARE Friends, It is an important day this Sunday at St. Luke’s, so I put “Some Thoughts to Share” first.  This week is commitment Sunday for our Rich In Heart Generosity program. If you are a member of St. Luke’s church, you have received a letter from me and a commitment card in the mail. I hope you have been following each day the prayer guide leading up to this Sunday. Please pray about how [...]

Paying It Forward At St. Luke’s

Since joining St. Luke’s in the mid eighties, the blessings I have received at St. Luke’s have been boundless – from being a part of a loving and supportive Sunday School class – the Randy Smith Bible Study group - to meeting the love of my life - Jack Blanton, Sr. -  in that class, and marrying him in the St. Luke’s Chapel.  Jack’s parents had been among the original members who founded the church, and Jack had hitchhiked home from University of Texas to be among those first 200+ members who joined on the first official Sunday, November [...]

A Small Investment in Something that Matters: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for October 23, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER Dear God,                   There are so many things that are obligations, things I have to do. I hear people say “the only thing you have to do is pay taxes and die.” Nope. At least it doesn’t feel that way to me. Because I am in relationships, because I live in a world where other people live, I have certain duties to perform as a husband, a father, a son, a friend, a citizen, a pastor, a leader, a member [...]

My Cup…

2017-03-28T14:56:06-05:00October 16th, 2016|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

by: Dr. Tom Pace It is an important discipline to say, every day, “my cup runneth over.” Today is one of those days when it is easy. My cup runneth over with gratitude: I am so grateful to the hundreds of people who made the completion of these new facilities possible. On behalf of all the people of St. Luke’s, thank you to the Long Range Planning Committee, the Building Committee, the What If… Capital Campaign Committee, the Grand Opening Celebration Committee, the professional teams of architects and contractors and consultants, and the best church staff anywhere, all [...]

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER Dear God, Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you for all you have done for me. Thank you for the basic joys of life—food, family, friends, shelter and security, health and freedom. Thank you for equipping me with the internal resources to live a good life, for health and wits and education and motivation. Thank you for planting within me gifts that the Holy Spirit has brought to life in me. Yes, O [...]

Thankful and Grateful

2017-03-28T14:56:09-05:00October 9th, 2016|All blogs, We Tell Our Stories|0 Comments

by Alisa Green Last fall, when it was announced that there would be a church-wide study, Unbinding Your Heart, I felt called to join a small group. My family and I had been members of St. Luke’s for seven years, but we rarely participated in any church activities other than going to service at 9:45 a.m. I would read in the bulletin about different groups, but wasn’t motivated to act. I think what changed my mind this time was because it was a church-wide study, and I liked that it would be connected to the Sunday sermons. I [...]
