by Karen McCarver Carlos bounded out of the classroom, a huge smile on his face to meet his new mentor, Jon Norman. The year was 2007, and Carlos was an outgoing fourth grade student at Briarmeadow who had been referred by his teacher to KIDS HOPE. Jon’s challenge was to help this child focus, improve in reading and math, and more than anything to build a trusting, nurturing relationship with Carlos. Over the next two years a deep bond developed as they studied, played games, shot hoops together and talked about their lives. Jon recalls Carlos’ fifth grade [...]

Dinner’s At Five

by Adrienne McGee Houston’s “Tax Day Flood” wrecked my neighborhood—we were officially the hardest hit in Harris County. And, since we’re right next to Addick’s Reservoir, the water stayed. Every day, we walked around to see where the high water line was, which streets were still barricaded and who was still flooded. One week later, we were checking out one of the worst-hit corners, and it was awful. Houses still had water in them, a week after the rains. Front yards were full of what, a week before, had been homes. While exploring, our eyes were caught by [...]

Up and Out: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for June 19, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER God of love and peace, Sometimes, an evil spirit comes over me, God, just like one came over King Saul. Sometimes it is depression, or jealousy, or rage, or out of control ambition, or greed, or snarkiness, or all sorts of other spirits. I refuse to give in to those spirits, God. I won’t let them take me over completely. I turn to you, the only one who can rescue me from such a spirit. [...]

Always Give Thanks – Inside Out Habits with Dr. Pace June 17

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER Gracious God, Some weeks are harder than others. We had five funerals for lovely people at St. Luke’s over the last week, all members of our congregation. And there is the Orlando tragedy. And a baby is killed by an alligator. And it is really hot and miserable outside. And the parking lot is a long way off to walk in the heat. You know, all that sadness and annoyance kind of piles up [...]

There are stories that have a place in my memory like a painting in a gallery, and this one has earned a place of prominence. I tell parents and singers as often as I can that through our youth choir, Pure Sound, we are building a soundtrack in their heads, so when life gets hard—and it will, if it hasn’t already—this music and theology will help them through tough times. Years ago, Phillip Storey graduated a year early from Episcopal High School and went to spend a year with a family in South America where he could hone his Spanish [...]

How Far Can Your Dollar Go?

A single dollar doesn’t get you much today. You can’t even buy a cup of coffee or a gallon of gas with a buck. But when all our singles are combined, we have some buying power. During the month of June, St. Luke’s will revive one of our traditions and dedicate the $1 bills from the offering to benefit a community partner. “Good for a Guitar” is a 10-week summer program for 6-12 grade students attending the youth program at Wesley Community Center. In 2015, 16 students completed the inaugural program that teaches guitar fundamentals to students without access to affordable instruction. Research shows that there are many [...]

State of the Heart: Inside-Out Habits with Dr. Tom Pace for June 5, 2016

We pray. We study the Bible. We make friends. We tell our stories. We give ourselves away in generosity and service. A PERSONAL PRAYER God of mercy, Oh, how quick I am to judge others. I don’t want to categorize people, but I do: Democrat or Republican, conservative or liberal, black or white or Hispanic, gay or straight, old or young, rich or poor, Longhorns or Aggies, with me or against me. I could go on and on. And then, of course, I form judgments about those people based on the category. If it isn’t about appearance, it is about their opinions [...]
