St. Luke's Scholarship

The following scholarships were established through St. Luke’s Methodist Church Foundation for St. Luke’s members and the children of members.

Please note each scholarship has its own unique criteria and are awarded subject to funding availability.

 

Scholarship Opportunities

THE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN’S FOUNDERS’ SCHOLARSHIPS, established by the United Methodist Women of St. Luke’s on the occasion of the organization’s fortieth anniversary, aid students pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university. The scholarships honor the founders of the organization who gathered January 8, 1946, in the home of Mrs. Hines H. Baker (Thelma).

THE HINES H. BAKER BIBLE CLASS SCHOLARSHIP was established to aid students pursuing a full time Christian vocation. The class bears the name of a charter member of St. Luke’s, Hines H. Baker, who taught the class for a number of years and helped significantly with the founding of St. Luke’s Church.

THE WOMEN’S BIBLE CLASS SCHOLARSHIP aids students pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university. The Class organized while the church met at Lamar High School and the scholarship honors the founding parents of our church.

THE KENNETH AND JANE FORD SCHOLARSHIPS were established for persons pursuing degrees from an accredited college or university in Texas. The Fords were charter members of St. Luke’s.

THE JAMES W. MOORE SCHOLARSHIP was established in memory of Ruth Claridge, who with her husband, Elmond, taught the third grade Sunday School Class of St. Luke’s for over thirty years. This scholarship aids students pursuing a full time Christian vocation.

THE JANE SHEFFIELD SCHOLARSHIP benefits students pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university. Jane Sheffield, a long time member of St. Luke’s, was also the first woman to graduate from the University of Texas Law School.

THE ANN AND RANDY SMITH SCHOLARSHIP benefits students pursing a degree in special education from an accredited college or university. The Adult Bible Study Class established this scholarship in honor of the Smiths, who have given leadership to the class since its inception. The scholarship was established in 1997, on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Adult Bible Study Class.

THE LEWIS WESLEY CUTRER SCHOLARSHIP was established to aid students pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university. Special consideration will be given to those with financial need. Mr. Cutrer, a former mayor of Houston, loved young people and believed in education.

JOHN T. KING SCHOLARSHIP was established in honor of the Reverend King who served St. Luke’s with distinction as Minister of Program and Administration. The scholarship benefits students pursuing a degree from Perkins School of Theology. A separate application for this scholarship is required.

UNITED METHODIST MEN’S SCHOLARSHIPS, established by the St. Luke’s United Methodist Men, whose mission is to involve men in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and his church, aid persons pursuing a college degree and who are in need of financial assistance.

GRACE I. AND GLENN R. DAVIES SCHOLARSHIPS were established to benefit students pursuing degrees from an accredited college or university. The Davies were long time members of St. Luke’s and their loved ones, in memory of Grace and Glenn, established these scholarships.

CELESTE TYBOR SCHOLARSHIP was established to aid single adults returning to an institution of higher education in the pursuit of a second career. Ms. Tybor was pursuing her second career when cancer cut her life short. Her many friends at St. Luke’s established this fund to honor her life and memory.

THE BENJAMIN VAUGHAN SCHOLARSHIP was established by Margaret and Emory Carl to aid students who are pursuing a career in the ordained ministry, church administration, religious education, church music, or any other full time career of service to the church. The scholarship was given in honor of Benny Vaughan, Director of Program Ministries of St. Luke’s.

THE ELIZABETH DODGE SCHWAB SCHOLARSHIP was established to benefit a student pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university. This scholarship was created in Elizabeth’s honor by her husband David and mother, Ethel Dodge, to ensure that deserving individuals receive all the support they can towards achieving their goals.
